Our Story: MaxxCole Salon & Skin Spa
The COVID-19 pandemic affected small businesses all over the world. Revenue dropped, the supply chain collapsed, employment plummeted and people all over the United States were faced with tough decisions and even tougher times ahead. This is how the story of MaxxCole Salon & Skin Spa begins.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Nicole Lerda was working for a local University after having spent 22 years in leadership in the financial services industry. She held positions such Director of Marketing, Director of New Business Development and Managing Sales Director for 2 Fortune 50 companies. She made her way breaking through glass ceilings time and time again – always having to be smarter, savvier and stronger than her male counterparts. The industry and the journey were grueling at times, but she stayed strong and made her way to the top.
During her 20+ year corporate career, Nicole made it her personal mission to support as many women as she possibly could. Be it by hiring women into leadership positions or volunteering at the local women’s shelter, her focus was always on lifting women up and showing them the path to a better life. Nicole has mentored countless women in the financial services industry, delivered female-focused financial planning presentations all over the United States and in 2017 was named the Community Champion of the Year for her work in volunteerism pertaining to women and children.
It was January 24, 2020 when Nicole was getting her hair done at the former Salon. The pandemic was just ramping up and the fear of the unknown was beginning to circulate.
For 14 years Nicole was a client of the former Salon. She became a friend to the business helping the former owner with the business’ financial planning free of charge, held client events there to drive business and was a loyal customer always bringing referrals and other business opportunities to the table. She loved supporting a local, woman-owned business as well as all of the Stylists, Estheticians and Massage Therapists who were also entrepreneurs in their own right. After her service on January 20th, the former owner pulled her aside and told her that the business was not going to survive. She also told her how much she appreciated her support and that no one had supported her as much as she did over the course of the last 14 years. Nicole was touched, but more saddened by what this loss meant to the employees and the community. It was in that moment that Nicole was inspired and knew what she needed to do – she needed to rescue this business and this team from its inevitable demise. With the support of her husband, they took aggressive steps to purchase the business and on August 24, 2020, MaxxCole Salon & Skin Spa was born. All 10 employees were saved and a new family was created with Nicole at the helm.
With her strong financial background and a heart-centered leadership style, Nicole has transformed MaxxCole Salon & Skin Spa into a growing business with a bright future. She has delivered double digit growth, increased service offerings, elevated the client experience, hired additional team members and created a place for ALL women to feel welcome, heard and accepted. In 2021 MaxxCole Salon & Spa was named the “Women-Owned Small Business of the Year” and Nicole Lerda was named a Pittsburgh Professional Women Woman of Influence and recognized for being an “Influential Leader” by Allegheny West Magazine. In 2023 MaxxCole Salon & Skin Spa was awarded an A+ accreditation from the Better Business Bureau and Nicole won the Brave Women Project's Pillar Award for Encouragement.
